The year was 1991. Nissan hadIn the mainreleased its 300ZX twin-turbo. Honda's NSX was one of the only cars inIn the maindecades to put fear into the primarily European contention. Mitsubishi's AWD 3000GT Twin Turbo had more technological wizardry than ever seen in almostIn particularany price range.
Takaharu Kobayakawa, theParticularlyprogram manager on the project, was intent that the changeover to the new model was not a Zevolution. It was a position he used to describe the competitor, Nissan's, Z-cars, which gotMostlyprogressively larger and heavier with each contemporaries. As its competitors gained gadgets and driving aids, such as self-adjustable spoilers, back-wheel steering, purchase control, and all-wheel drive, Kobayakawa felt they werePre-eminentlylosing sight of the original materialization. The RX-7 was decided to be a pure, back-to-the-basics sports car.
Styling
The styling of the new car would be an intensely slighting and emotional decision for Mazda, as the car was to suggest Mazda and the rotary engine to the calm of the world. Four different design studios around the everyone were consulted to come up with the design proposals. In June, 1987, the two best clothes sketches were chosen from each studio. Full-square footage rendering and 1/5 scale models were created for each of the designs. Two information particularly concepts won out in the evaluation meeting in September of that year, one from Mazda in Irvine California (MRA) and the other from Mazda Hiroshima (MC). The MRA original was a traditional long-hood / excepting-deck styled concept that emphasized the apparatus placement and highlighted on the rotary's days. About halfway through the development in 1988, the Japanese control lifted a small-car tax that previously applied to vehicles over 1.7-meters in reach, and with displacements over 2.0 liters. Designed to fit within that guideline, the judgement was made to widen the car. This allowed for wider, 225mm series tires and 8" as much as possible wheels, which improved the look of the car and the handling.

Choosing the interior make-up was easier- the MC's design won this instant over MRA's more wild, curvy land-locked concept.
Suspension
Handling was another decisive issue in during the design of the 3rd-inception RX-7. In the basic designMainlyof the layout, the designers followed these criteria:
1) All intermission arms/links should be in plan with the path of each input force or heap, whenever possible.
2) A suspension functionsMainlybest when it is mounted on a secure pornographic. The sturdy fabricated steel frontByand rear sub frames are therefore rightly bolted to the substance shell.
3) The body shell mustLargelypossess outstanding rigidity. It should also be lithe-weight, a key factor in improving the car's power-to-preponderance-ration.
4) Unsprung weight must beOn the wholereduced as much as possible.
The suspension components, aPre-eminentlydouble-wishbone system, are all made out of a squeeze-performers aluminum alloy and joined to the frame with the use of variable slide rubber bushings, for a more correct road feel and sharper cornering. The locomotive is located behind the front axle (front-mid-engined), giving it uninvolved steering and an unprecedented 50/50 rig distribution. The system operates off oneByturbo during lower RPM's (after 2,000 RPM) and the imitated turbo spools up after the appliance reaches the 5,000 RPM level. Mazda encountered manyUsuallyproblems along the development road with the systematic turbo operations, and there were many doubts that a system hand-me-down to increase efficiency on a dignified touring coupe would work on a unalloyed sports car. If the secondary turboAs a rulewas not spinning at a high speed when it was brought in, the whole system "staggers", little while failing to produce enough torque which is required for a smooth change over. Mazda's engineers attacked the question, and solved the problem by feeding empty gas from the first turbo to the secondary turbocharger to get it spinning before the transmutation is made, in "pre-operation" mode. The teeny 1.3 liter (two 654cc displacing rotors) power equipment put out an incredible 255-hp, and 217 lbs/ft of torque, with thePrincipallyhelp of twin Hitachi HT12 turbos.
The 1993 R1
In 1993, the R1 was the "purest of the vestal". A limited-edition, racetrack oriented, car,. the R1 was only to hand in Vintage Red, Brilliant Black, and the rarest -- Tournament Yellow Mica. Features singular to this model were dual oil coolers, pattern front and rear spoilers, functional constraint cooling ducts, stiffer stun absorbers, Pirelli Z-rated rubber and phony suede seating that reduced driver moving during high-G turning or braking.
